FRSC urges motorists to drive safely, says road does not determine safety

The Badagry Unit Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Babatope Agbaje, has urged motorists to drive safely to suit the present condition of the road especially in the ever busy trans-border highway.

He said situation of roads does not determine safety, but the attitude of the driver behind the wheel.

The ACC Agbaje spoke why briefing journalists about traffic situations within the corridor. 

He said all motorists and commuters are expected to plan ahead, add extra hours on their planning that will enable them have enough time to drive greatly and safely before embarking on any journey, knowingfully well the deplorable conditions of the road.

He said FRSC being saddled with responsibility of making highway safe for the users, had marked the major bkack spots within the corridor and will not relent from manning them seriously to quaranteed safety of road users.

"I hailed goverment for embarking on it's best efforts that would soon made the road back to suitable conditions.

"As FRSC, it is part of our duty to advice, suggest and give accounts of what is happening on the road.

"I thanked FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, for establishing early morning safety drive at motor parks, purposely to educate both drivers and passengers on safety tips before embarking on any journey.

"This singular reason had contributed so immensely in reducing traffic crashes within the trans-border highway. The Command had never recorded any fatal crash apart from minors over a year ago. 

"We are able, through the early morning safety campaign in motor parks, discovered the rate of crashes on the road that has to do with bad attitude towards using the highways, lack of vehicle maintenance culture, disobedience to other traffic rules and regulations while behind the wheels.

"We thanked Badagry traditional rulers, transport union leaders for their unwavering supports with FRSC on enforcing traffic rules. We work together as a team to ensure sanity on the ever busy highway.

The FRSC Chief, urged drivers to always imbibe the spirit of defensive driving culture that would enable them arrive their destinations safely.

He reminded drivers that any money being paid by passengers to take them from one destination to other safely is a contractual agreement and default attracted great punishment.

"We always carried out public enlightenment campaign on the role of drivers and the contractual agreement signed with passengers conveying in his the vehicle.

"Driving people from one destination to other is an agreement and drivers should not be forgetting that failure to fulfilled the agreement terms had rendered him failure and unprofessional which attracted serious punishment."

FRSC will continue to leverage on solid synergies with other sisters' agencies, traditional rulers and transport stakeholders to further eradicate indiscipline causing traffic crashes the road, he added.
