The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, paraded six suspected robbers operating in military camouflage, terrorising and forcefully dispossessing motorists and commuters of their valuables.

The suspects, Vincent Magnus, Elias John, Ikechukwu Alore, Ifeanyi Emmanuel, Chibueze Kingsley and Chigozie Micheal were arrested at the Sagamu-Benin expressway in Ijebu-Ife, Ogun State.

Giving account of the arrest at the Police Headquarters in Elewe-Eran, Abeokuta, the Police Commissioner, Edward Ajogun, said their arrest followed a report at the command on September 4, 2020, that a gang of armed robbers in military uniform were operating at Sagamu-Benin expressway in Ijebu-Ife, forcefully dispossessing motorist and commuters of their valuables.

He said “On September 4, 2020, at about 2:30am, the Command received a distress call that a gang of armed robbers who dressed in military camouflage have blocked the Sagamu-Benin expressway at Ijebu-Ife, forcefully dispossessing motorist and commuters of their valuables.

Ajogun stressed that in an attempt to bring the hoodlums to book, they (hoodlums) engaged operatives of Special Ati-robbery Squard (SARS) in a gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes, adding that at the end of the gun duel, one of the hoodlums was shot dead while others escaped with gun-shot injuries.

“On the strength of the distress call, a team of Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) was detailed to join force with the patrol team of Ijebu-Ife Division and confront the dare devil men. On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums engaged them in a gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes, at the end of which one of the hoodlums was shot dead while others escaped with gun-shot injuries.

He added that the fleeing members were later arrested within the shortest possible period in order to put a permanent end to their nefarious activities.

The gang leader Obiorah Michael who sustained bullet wounds in his abdomen confessed that he had been in the illegal operating over two years ago.

Speaking to newsmen, Obiora explains that he indulged in the act in order to meet the financial need of his family.
