APC, PDP bicker over outcome of Lagos bye-elections

The two major political parties that participated in yesterday, Saturday - December 5, 2020 bye-elections in Lagos, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have clashed over the conduct and outcome of the poll held in Kosofe state constituency 2 and Lagos East Senatorial District.

The State Chairman of Lagos PDP, Engr Deji Doherty, was first to throw a jab at the ruling APC, in a statement he issued on Sunday afternoon, describing the bye-elections as a charade, saying that the APC in collaboration with INEC went about allocating votes to party against the PDP.

Doherty said relevant lessons had been learnt by the PDP and its stakeholders, assuring that Lagos would be rescued from the APC and its leadership soon.

In a swift reaction, the APC State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Seye Oladejo, described Doherty’s statement on the bye-elections as a ‘ comic relief from the recent pressure and challenges’.

Oladejo said the outcome of the bye-elections was a referendum on the spineless and ineffectual opposition that the PDP had been providing in the state for over two decades.

”The reaction of the Lagos State chairman of PDP to the humiliating defeat of his party to the recently held Lagos East Senatorial and Kosofe 2 Lagos State House of Assembly elections can best be described as a comic relief from the recent pressure and challenges.

” It was a referendum on the spineless and ineffectual opposition that the PDP has been providing in Lagos State for over two decades.

” The age-long disharmony and lack of coordination in the PDP effectively laid the foundation for the permanent trouncing of the opposition party in Lagos state”, said Oladejo.

Oladejo explained ” The impressive performance of the ruling party , APC, in the determined implementation of its progressive policies has made PDP a taboo in Lagos state.

” It’s a big surprise that the state chairman could complain about the results of the elections that he was too busy to campaign for his candidates.

” While they were busy conducting fake personal opinion polls, the ruling APC was reaching out to the voters with life changing programs, manifestos and policies that are relevant to the challenges of the day.

” However, we emphatize with Engr Doherty who must still be dazed by the total annihilation.

” The bye-election will go down in history as one of the best in terms of conduct by INEC, the professionalism of the security agents and the fact that the results truly reflected the popular will”, said Oladejo.

Recall that the candidates of the APC, Hon. Femi Saheed ( Kosofe state constituency 2) and Mr Tokunbo Abiru ( Lagos East Senatorial District) were declared winner by the INEC this morning after polling the highest votes in their respective elections.

Saheed won with a total vote of 12,434 while his close rival, Hon. Sikiru Alebiosu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) scored 2068 votes in total.

Abiru polled a total of 89,204 votes while his major contender, Babatunde Gbadamosi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), polled 11,257 votes.
