The Lagos State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) CC Olusegun Ogungbemide has said the Corps would zero tolerance for any indiscipline that could cause road mishaps during the festive period.

He said FRSC is targeting crash free yuletide, saying this could only be achieved through maximum cooperation of all road users, especially motorists.

CC Ogungbemide spoke at 2020 'ember months' flag-off campaign, tagged: "Drive Safe, Stay Safe" organised by Epe Unit Command at Ikorodu Motor Park, Ayetoro, Epe, Lagos.

Ho disclosed that the Command had deployed its personnel to designated routes, as part of measures to ensure sanity on the state's highways, during this year’s Christmas and end of the year celebrations.

He emphasised that this year's operation zero tolerance for road indiscipline would be targeted at enforcement on critical offences, such as: “excessive speeding, dangerous driving, tyre violation, lane indiscipline, road obstruction, drunk driving, use of phone while driving, overloading, seatbelt violation, child safety, passengers manifest violation and mechanically deficient vehicles".

Corps Commander Ogungbemide, enjoined all motorists to drive carefully with maximum consideration of traffic rules that guaranteed safety on the road and as well avoid night traveling.

In his welcoming address, the Epe Unit Commander, Assistant Corps Commander (ACC) Tunde Adesina, said 'ember months' campaign is an FRSC yearly routine programme to remind and sensitise road users the importance of obeying traffic rules as increment in both human and vehicular movements very certain during the last four months of the year.

"This event which stands out because of the love the federal government has for its citizens to be saved as a result of losing lives on our road, hence the creation of FRSC. This avenue is therefore created to talk to and remind ourselves about the proper use of the road which go along with the mandate of FRSC to eliminate or reduce road traffic crashes on our road to the bearest minimum.

"The theme for this year which “Drive Safe, Stay Safe” is specially and carefully chosen because of our attitude during the month of December coupled with the world wide COVID-19 Pandemic.
Motorists are exposed to RTC during December due to socio-economic activities that increased unnecessarily. People want to meet up with their needs within the shortest period of time, thereby over-stretching the road transport system especially the road infrastructure, the vehicles and drivers. These three things need to be considered whenever on the road making a journey no matter how short the journey is.

"In attempt to make more money the motorists especially the commercial drivers will make overloading, excessive speed, drunk driving, reckless driving and others related indiscipline. Meanwhile, these violations of not complying with road traffic rules and regulations usually leads to avoid crashes such as the one that occurred in the month of March during COVID-19 lockdown where six (6) persons lost their lives.

"The Corps has mandated her personnel to make sure we visit Parks, Churches, Mosques and even Schools for the preach of safety along our numerous road to all road users (Drivers, Riders and Pedestrians).

"Conclusively, I will personally and sincerely appeal to all on behalf of the Corps to take the business of safety on our roads very seriously and encouraged those of us present here to deliver this invaluable message of safety to our loved ones at our various homes.

"I sincerely thank our royal fathers, sister agencies, stakeholders the NURTW, RTEAN, ACCOMORA, EDCODAN and others for their support and attendance during this crucial period. While wishing you all, journey mercies back home, Merry Christmas, Safe and Prosperous Ney Year, I equally remind us to keep to the COVID-19 protocol because it is real," ACC Adesina added.
