As part of their collaborative effort to strengthening their institution for effective service delivery, the Chairman and Board members of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on December 2, 2020, paid a courtesy/familiarisation visit to Rivers State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) CC Salisu Umar Galadunci rss at his Port Harcourt office.
The RSIEC Chairman, Hon Justice George O. Omereji (rtr) in his opening remark thanked the Sector Commander for receiving them despite the short notice. He applauded the Sector Commander for the role FRSC is playing in easing traffic in and around Port Harcourt in addition with its in Nation building that he is a living witness.
Hon Omereji, said the visit was to hint the Command of the forthcoming the state's Local Government Election scheduled for 2021, saying it is very necessary to inform the Sector Commander in time to enable him prepare for every necessary assistance that will guaranteed free, fair and credible LG election in the state.
The Chairman seek for collaboration from the Corps and pleaded for the Corps to oblige them when needed.
In his response, the Sector Commander thanked God for the life of the retired Judge who after retirement the State find him worthy to head such an important Commission as a result of his experience and integrity. He welcomed him and his Board members to the Command.
The Sector Commander went on to assure the Commission of the readiness of Federal Road Safety Corps Rivers to partner with RSIEC, and promised the Command will put in their best regardless of State difficult terrains.
He used the opportunity to educate the August visitors of the Command's on going 2020 Ember Months safety campaigns and activities earmarked to ensure traffic is managed to allow free flow where no commuter will be stranded on any highway. He added that the Command intend to mount some help areas in strategic places where motorists could rest or seek for help while on a journey.
The Sector Commander also thanked the Rivers State Governor for his giant strides efforts in construction of bridges specifically to help ease of doing business in the State.
He in addition informed the visitors that FRSC already has a designed Standard Operating Procedure for conduct of elections, he however advised the Commission to subject vehicles and drivers to be used for the election to test and checking before they are used in transporting electoral materials.
The meeting started with an opening prayer, which was followed by introduction of senior officers of FRSC which includes DC Ops, ACC TRG, ACC PRS and CRC Provost. On the other hand, members of RSIEC present were Hon. Justice George O. Omereji (Rtr) Chairman RSIEC, Seven Commissioners of the Commission and Director Public Affairs.
