A suspect, Esther Oshin is now in Police net in Ogun State for allegedly conniving with six others to dupe her friend of the sum of N1.5m.
The State Police Commissioner, Edward Ajogun who paraded the suspects at the Police command headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, said the suspects were tracked and arrested after the victim, Gbemisola Ajimoh, reported to the Police that her bank account had been hacked by some internet fraudsters, with about N1.5m siphoned off.
Ajogun said following her report a team of police detectives led by “one of the command’s best”, Woman Sergeant Ibiyemi Olayemi, was detailed to investigate and bring the culprits to book.
He added that in the course of investigation, it was revealed that the money siphoned off the account was used to purchase goods, including handsets.
The Commissioner said the handsets were subsequently sold to a receiver, Adewunmi Olanrewaju at the Computer Village, Ikeja Lagos.
He noted that further investigations revealed that the victim carelessly entrusted her ATM card in care of her friend and Church member, Esther Oshin.
The Police Chief said in the process, Esther “assessed her bank account and discovered some millions of naira in it, adding that the millions belong to some illiterate butchers who regularly pay money into the account for onward transfer to cow sellers they do business with.
Ajogun said Esther later got linked to one Mayowa Morakinyo, “an internet fraudster (popularly called Yahoo Boy)”, who requested from her and obtained the last four digits of the ATM card and one-time-pin (OTP) in her possession.
He added that with the information, Morakinyo moved out from the account the sum of N1.5m to purchase goods, including mobile phones from Jumia, online marketers.
The Commissioner said the handsets were subsequently sold to the receiver, Olanrewaju, who allegedly bought each of the phones worth N380,000 at the rate of N240,000.
He added that the police having earlier arrested other accomplices in the case, visited the Computer Village with a view of inviting Olanrewaju for questioning, while in the process he raised alarm and allegedly mobilized hoodlums, who got police detectives beaten up and were screaming “we don’t want SARS” in a bid to prevent his arrest.
He added that a team of policemen from Area ‘F’ Lagos, on distress call, raced to the scene to rescue the detectives and succeeded in effecting the arrest of the receiver.
He noted that all the seven suspects involved in the case have been arrested, while he listed them as Oshin Esther, Adeoti Busayo, Morakinyo Titilayo, Mayowa Morakinyo, Seni Habeeb, Tomiwa Adeosun and Adewunmi Olanrewaju.
Ajogun said that they have confessed that they committed the crime and have explained “their respective conspirational roles”.
He added that this is the true picture of the case, as against a video that was circulated recently on social media, which “maliciously misrepresented the assistance given by Policemen in Lagos State to the detectives at the Computer Village to effect the arrest of the receiver”.
