No fewer than 15 people were confirmed dead while 38 injured this morning in a fatal crash that occurred at Omen Bridge along Ijebu-Ode/Ibadan expressway, Oru-Ijebu, Ogun State.
The accident, it was gathered occurred when a white Mitsubishi Canter truck somersaulted due to excess speed while wrongfully overtaking another moving vehicle at the highway.
According to an eyewitness, the accidented-vehicle with registration No. XE 331MKA, fully loaded with onions and pepper with passengers sitting on top, hit part of the bridge, leading to its somersault and ended up under the bridge.
Confirming the story, TRACE Divisional Commander, Ijebu-Igbo/Ago-Iwoye Unit Commander, Oladele Badmus, said TRACE, Police and FRSC operatives immediately got to the scene of the accident, rescued the injured victims to the general Hospital in Ijebu-Ode, adding that the presumed dead bodies had been taken to Sabongari by the request of the Hausa people in Ijebu-Ode.
Commander Badmus further stressed that TRACE realised that the vehicle was overloaded with 65 occupants, all males apart from goods, which might have been too heavy for the vehicle to negotiate the approaching step of the bridge.
