TRACE 'll begin to prosecute traffic offenders in Ogun

The Corps Commander and Chief Executive Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Olaseni Ogunyemi, has said the Corps would not hesitate to prosecute traffic offenders from January ending.
He said any recalcitrant driver apprehended will immediately prosecute in accordance to traffic law instead of paying fines, saying this measure will contribute immensely to reduction of traffic crashes in the state.
The Corps Commander noted that the weight of fining traffic offenders is not enough for punishment, it does not really enforce the recalcitrant drivers to comply with traffic rules and regulations. Henceforth, anyone caught disobeying traffic rules would definitely be prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.
He made this know at a press briefing, while releasing reports of Road Traffic Crashes between December 15, 2019 to January 15, 2020. He said a total number of 82 road traffic crashes involving 11 private cars, 10 private buses, 13 commercial buses, 15 commercial cars, six motorcycles, one tricycle, 12 medium trucks, 11 heavy truck and 13 other vehicles recorded between Sunday, December 15, 2019 and Wednesday, January 15, 2020. He decried worrisome as road traffic crashes continue increasing instead of decreasing despite all public enlightenment and other efforts of TRACE to stem the ugly trend.
He explained that during the period, 291 persons were involved in Road Traffic Crashes, out of which 160 persons (96 males, 64 females) sustained various degrees of injuries, 31 persons (15 males, 16 females) killed and 100 persons were rescued unhurt due to prompt response to 47 emergency calls received by TRACE Corps.
According to Commander Ogunyemi, "41.93% of the road traffic crashes were caused by excessive speed, 23.78% by dangerous driving, 10.99% by bad tyres, 3.33% by driving against traffic and 19.97% by other causes.
"Also 88 motor vehicles and 39 Motorcycles were apprehended for 163 offences.
"Our resolve to reduce deaths and injuries on all roads in the state will be pursued vigorously and relentlessly in the year 2020 such that no traffic offender shall go unpunished.
Commander Ogunyemi, appreciates the unflinching support of the Traffic Whistle Blowers throughout the state for their ever prompt information whenever there is any crash on our roads.
TRACE Corps is hereby appealing to the motoring public to obey all traffic rules and remember that the Road is patient but does not forgive.
