FRSC pledges to establish functioning Joint Task Force to evacuate traders off highways

The Ogun State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ahmed Umar has vowed to establish a functioning Joint Task Force with full enforcement to evacuate traders and commercial vehicle operators obstructing the highways.






He said the joint task force will include traditional rulers, both state and local government officials, State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Navy, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), So-Safe and other relevant security agencies.
He condemned the high level at which traders and commercial vehicle operators have occupied 75 percent of the roads, thereby hindering free flow of traffic and causing nuisances in some major highways, such as Tollgate, along Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, Oju-ore, along Idiroko Border Road, Sango-Ijoko and other critical corridors in the state.
The FRSC chief, said obstructing the highway would continue to make traffic crashes so fatal whenever there is an accident on the road because it will difficult for articulated vehicle to manuevre its way if suddenly develop mechanical fault.
Corps Commander Umar, stressed that FRSC being saddled with responsibility of making highway safe for the users can not continue folding its arms watching innocent souls dying on daily basis as a result of disobedience to traffic rules and regulations.
The newly Sector Commander, who assumed office on June 11, 2020, disclosed this at his familiarisation tour to some Unit Commands: Ifo, Ota and Idiroko, said his regime will focus more on rigorous public enlightenment with strict enforcement, adding that enlightenment without enforcement is just a mere drama.
He noted that the Command would leverage on synergy and collaboration with other sister agencies including the transport stakeholders to enable FRSC achieve it's target of maximum reduction of road traffic crashes across the country.
Sector Commander Umar, appeal to state and local government authorities to provide markets for traders and garages for commercial vehicles operators to further make the road more safe for the users.
He urged the FRSC personnel to always consider their safety, work diligently and avoid extortion and all form of indiscipline that could tarnish the reputation of the agency whenever they are on duty.
He explained that FRSC doesn't tolerate and form of indiscipline, especially extortion and corruption from personnel and anyone caught with such act may likely loose the job after full investigation and found guilty.
The Unit Commanders, Itori - Assistant Corps Commander (ACC) Sunday Oko; Ota - ACC Ganiu Akeem; Ifo/ Agbado - ACC Joshua Ibitomi and Idiroko - ACC Akinwunmi Olaluwoye, in their welcoming address, pledged to continue coordinating the staff attached to the commands to enable the Corps achieve it's target.
The commanders appealed to the Sector Commander Umar to address the challenges facing the Commands.
