The Lagos Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Olusegun Ogungbemide has warned motorists against floating Federal Goverment's directives on interstate travels to prevent the spread of COVID 19 pandemic in the country.
He said FRSC would not have mercy with any motorist caught violating the Goverment's order of interstate travels.
Corps Commander Ogungbemide disclosed this while he led the FRSC personnel under the Commands to carry out public enlightenment on goverment interstate policies that would continue preventing the spread of coronavirus across major parks in the state.
The public enlightenment, according to him, was in line with NCDC Covid 19 task force directive, that all and sundry should adhere to the minimum requirements for protection from contacting coronavirus and to also contain the spread as it was observed that most people are not complying with the guideline or rule of staying safe.
He said the Federal Road Safety Commission, National Headquarters, in the bid of supporting and enforcing Federal Goverment directives, ordered that all Commands should embark on aggressive public enlightenment at motor parks and various fleet operators terminus within areas of jurisdiction.
The command had earlier carried out a survey on the use of face mask across the Lagos, where it was observed a low level of compliance.
He admonished both drivers, and passengers, to wear their face mask correctly and frequently wash their hands, space the sitting arrangement in their vehicles to fall in line with social physical distancing as propagated by NCDC.
He said FRSC will not relent on its effort on constantly interface with the transporters and motorists in general till the end of Covid 19 in the country.
The Ikeja Unit Commander, Emma Fekoya, said unabated and veracious public enlightenment and sensitisation around the Command's jurisdiction have been tremendously yeild positive as 65 percent of motorists have observed obeying the guildlines.
She said: "Survey carried out on pedestrians and vehicle occupants on effective and proper use of face mask since Thursday, July 2 through Thursday, July 9, 2020 totalling 638 persons. It was observed that only 324 persons properly and correctly wore the mask, constituting 51 percent where a total number of 196 persons did not correctly wear it, constituting 31 percent where as 118 persons did not wear at all constituting 18 percent.
"In compliance with the above directive, Ikeja command visited some motor parks and fleet operators terminus, GUO motor park, God is good motor park in Iyana Ipaja and CDO at Ikeja, to assess their level of compliance in accordance with the National task force on Covid 19.
"The officers and marshals of Ikeja command were there to caution and warn both the drivers and passengers to wear their face mask correctly and wash their hands properly. "They were also told to space the sitting arrangement in their vehicles to fall in line with social physical distancing as propagated by NCDC.
This also availed the command opportunity to inspect all the necessary protective equipments put in place for their customers, including filling of passenger's manifest correctly for contact purpose.
"There have been tremendous improvement in some parks and fleet operators terminus. Where there were shortfalls, they were told to put it right.
"Interestingly, most of the drivers of fleet operators are complying and passengers wanting to board were all enlightened of the consequence of non compliance with the lay down rules by NCDC .
"It is of note that the command will not relent on this effort, as it shall constantly interface with the transporters and motorists in general till the end of Covid 19.
