By PASTOR F.E. BAMIDURO
When the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit was created in 1992 by Simeon Danladi Midenda, it was a good initiative and I was one those who believed its creation would put a stop to incessant robbery which became the business of the day as at time time. But all of a sudden, its members deviated from the original reasons why it was formed.
Members of the SARS started doing things that are different from what they are trained for. Instead of going after the criminal and robbers that they were assigned to get-rid off, they started tormenting the youths that are struggling to survive on the street.
Many leaders of tomorrow had been molested, ridiculed, tormented and even killed without any trace of criminal offence. Hmmm, God will judge them.
This is not only peculiar to only FSARS, other units within our security agencies are not left out. Within the the Nigerian Army, there are lots of them. Religious institutions, there are many pastors that their activities are contrary to what written in the Holy Bible and Imams are not left out. Every aspects of the country need to be looked into for proper modification. Or else, we can't get to the promised land as a country.
Some years back, I wrote an article "The regret of the Saints "Are we not all regretting now? The system we all fought for its stability is now working contrary to the foundational principles, what a pity!
I am one of those few who believed in restructuring. Every institutions and processes of the country such as religion, education, security agencies, and even our system of governance need to be restructured if only we want peace and unity within the country. Last week when I was traveling to my home town Ikare Akoko, a gang of police collected 15,000 Naira from me under pressure an humiliation at Alausa for nothing. ..What should we called this set of police officers? Police or thieves? They are some of the bad eggs in the institution that need to be replaced or sanctioned if properly restructured and found wanting of any improper acts.
As for the SARS, it should be disbanded immediately. It is time to defenestrate its amoral personnel, reform those amenable and throw the books at the criminals in their ranks. A six months conventional training as it is for the officers in the armed forces should be applied for the police.
Enough is enough! Restructuring is all what we need and it should cut across to all other institutions.
